At NuVet we are one of only a handful of UK practices to perform keyhole surgery. This method of operating is less painful and traumatic for our patients as well as giving faster recovery times and fewer stitches, so everyone is happy.
Most commonly, we use our keyhole equipment to perform bitch spays - on average we perform one or two of these operations every day. However, we can use the equipment for lots of different procedures - from looking into ears and up noses, to sampling the liver or operating on the blader.
Keyhole Bitch Spay
On the right, you can see one of our nurses preparing a dog for keyhole surgery. Although the wound is only a few cm long, we still perform a large fur clip, to make sure everthing is perfectly clean for the surgery. We use a special tipping table to move the dog from left to right during the surgery, so that we can remove both ovaries through one tiny hole.
Routinely, we only remove the ovaries, rather than the ovaries and the whole uterus. We can remove the uterus if you request, but in normal, healthy dogs, there is rarely a reason to do so
